USA: Horrifying moment car ploughs into Charlottesville protesters at alt-right rally

One person was killed and 19 injured after a car ploughed into counter-protesters at a ‘Unite the Right’ rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Saturday, following violent clashes between anti-racists and so-called ‘alt- right’ activists.

The suspected driver of the car has been arrested and was later identified as 20-year-old James Fields. He has since been charged with second degree murder.

Saturday's car attack came after hundreds of white nationalists descended on Charlottesville over the weekend to protest the decision from local authorities to remove a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee from the small Virginian city.

Some 200 white nationalists joined a torch-lit rally in front of the effigy on Friday, with many participants chanting racist slogans and throwing up the Nazi salute.

On Saturday, self-proclaimed neo-Nazis, white supremacists, and white nationalist groups, among others, gathered as part of a ‘Unite the Right’ rally in the centre of the town. Violence quickly broke out when anti-racists arrived to confront the group, with police going on to disperse the rallies after proclaiming a state of emergency.

US President Donald Trump has since come under fire for his response to the car ramming and the white nationalist protests, criticising violence from “many sides" while choosing not to explicitly condemn the far-right.
